The following is a history of the HOTEL SENDAI PLAZA

1888 (Meiji 21)

The NIPPON TETSUDO, INC. built the MUTSU HOTEL in front of the Sendai Station. After that, the NIPPON TETSUDO, INC. built a truly Japanese style inn (ryokan) on the north side of the Sendai Station and moved the MUTSU HOTEL. The founder, Mr. Sukesaburo Aoki bought the old MUTSU HOTEL and this was the birth of the MUTSU BEKKAN AOKI HOTEL. One of the most prominent guests, the German architect, Mr. Bruno Taut, wrote in his book, NIHON BI NO SAI HAKKEN (Rediscovering the Beauty of Japan), of his cultural exchanges with Mr. Aoki.

1946 (Showa 21)

After the MUTSU BEKKAN AOKI HOTEL was destroyed by fire during the war, it was rebuilt as the AOKI HOTEL. It was designated as one of the eight Buyers Hotels in Japan. It was reported later in the ASAHI NEWSPAPER that amid the ashes of the war, "this HOTEL was one of the few buildings remaining which had a cultural flavor." The Poet Laureate of England, Mr. E. Blunden, stayed for a half a year, and afterwards, sent a poem named "SENDAI" to the HOTEL. (Presently, this poem is carved in stone and is on display in the plaza in front of the HOTEL SENDAI PLAZA).

1951 (Showa 26)

The AOKI HOTEL was registered bythe government for the first time in the TOHOKU Area.

1957 (Showa 32)

Being remodeled, it was renamed the SENDAI CENTRAL HOTEL. A nine storied building with three floors as a hotel. This was the first hotel in the TOHOKU area built out of reinforced concrete.

1975 (Showa 50)

Moving to the front of the present prefecture government building, it opened as the HOTEL SENDAI PLAZA. At the time it opened, there were 221 guest rooms. It was the birth of the first city hotel in the TOHOKU area.
